Why you get irritated

We have all been there.  Some every day.  Some multiple times a day.  Is it an emotion we want to feel?  No.  I definitely don’t.  Yet it seems to happen a lot more often then.  Lately I have been feeling irritated a lot.  With traffic, with people, with situations.  Which made me wonder what was going on with me.  I took a step back and was just curious as to what I was thinking, what I was doing.

Turns out, I was in my head a lot.  There are a lot of moving parts in my life right now and I am trying to figure out how to keep all the balls in the air.  Now I am a big advocate to writing things down.  If they are on a piece of paper, they are out of my head.  And while this is helpful, it just feels as if it is all just going about in circles in my mind.  Nothing is going wrong.  Things are taking a bit longer than I hoped and there are a lot of things that feel as though they are out of my hands.

Paying attention

So while I have been in my head the world has been moving on all around me and well, irritating me.  The quickest way out, for me, was to just start being present.  Paying attention to what is going on around me.  Appreciate what was happening in my life.  There are things that I have no control over and my mantra to this: things are moving at just the right pace.

Slowing down is important in times like these.  Taking care of yourself is important.  Eating well and working out also help your body negotiate all of lives’ twists and turns.

Why you get irritated

The most important work to do at a time like this is to start paying attention to what you are thinking.  Behind the irritation is always a thought, or many thoughts.  Mine went something like this:  I wish they would hurry up.  I don’t have time for this.  I can’t listen to this anymore.  No wonder I ended up in a state of irritation.  The next time you are feeling irritated, notice what thoughts are you thinking?

Irritation in itself is not a bad emotion.  No emotion is good or bad.  Emotions are just there to show you what is going on with you.  Society just loves to go to good feeling emotions and when they are not feeling them 100% they think something is wrong with them.  The amount of anti-depressants people take proves this.  I am not talking about people who suffer from mental disorders who do need medication.  Just those who feel bad, don’t like it and want to swallow a pill to make it go away, or drink or take drugs to numb themselves.

Emotions can’t hurt you

We are all human and part of our lives means to experience the full spectrum of these emotions.  Most humans are not brave enough.  Emotions can’t hurt you, you will not die from them.  But going through the emotion makes you infinitely stronger and makes your life richer.  So feeling irritation is not a bad thing.  Acting on it, may not be such a good idea.  Discovering why you are feeling irritation, what thoughts you are having and how you show up when you feel irritated, is the work you need to do.

It is nothing outside of you that is causing the irritation, that is just a circumstance that is happening in your life.  How do you know this?  Because the next person may not at all be irritated by that thing.  If it was the thing that caused the irritation, every single person would be irritated.

Happening in your mind

Remember all your emotions are showing you is what is happening in your mind, what you are thinking.  It’s like a compass.  You can figure out what is going on and course correct if needed.  Feeling happier emotions mostly show you that you are on the right path for you, negative emotions show that you have work to do.  It is actually a wonderful measure that we have been given.  Each of us is different and each personal compass is uniquely made for us.

I would love to hear about your experiences with the different emotions and how you passed through them.  If you need a bit of help with this, let me know.

Till next week.
