Why failing is important
Most of our lives, we get taught that failing is bad, that we are not good enough when we fail. We got tests in school and if we failed we got punished, regardless if we had a good understanding of the work, but we had dyslexia, as happened to a friend of mine. We have all been subjected to various tests that you had to pass in a certain way. Although it could be very different in school these days, I have been out for a long time.
On the other hand, little children fail all the time. They crawl for the first time and fall flat on their face, they take a step for the first time and land on their butts, they ride a bike for the first time and get some scrapes. And we absolutely applaud them for the effort and encourage them to keep going. Yet as they get older we tend to tell them to be careful and to not try new things because they may fall and hurt themselves. Where is the line that we cross between encouraging and discouraging?
One of the things I learned in coaching is that it is good to fail
That does not mean that you should not do stuff and thereby failing anyway. We are encouraged to try all sorts of things and fail. We are taught it is a given. Most of us are too scared to try new things in case we fail or are embarrassed. We have a real fear about putting ourselves out there.
None of us are automatically good at anything. Some may have a bit of talent which gives you a head start, but unless you cultivate your talent all you will have is something you are marginally good at. Even top athletes use the talent they do have and build upon it. They don’t just sit back and expect to win every race. They go out there and do the work, they practice every single day and they still fail. But the difference is they learn, they figure out what did not work, they changed their tactics and went out there and tried again until they succeeded.
There is not one entrepreneur in this world that has not failed and many, many times over. But they keep going. Why? Because they have a big enough why. They have a motivation to keep going. They have a very good reason why they want to succeed. I encourage you to find what that is for you. Specially if you want to build something or do something with your life. Something that will keep you going even though you don’t have the energy or motivation or willpower, because all of those are finite.
Why failing is important
I have a couple of clients who come to me and say they want to give up. When I ask them why they say nothing they are doing is working. But if you knew for a fact that after trying 100 things something is going to work, would you do the 100 things? Think about that. If you knew for sure you would meet your person after 100 dates, would you go on the 100 dates?

Hi, I’m Antoinette Porter, your hostess at Live Life Inspired where we will explore what is possible in your life. A life you can look back on and say, “Wow!! I did that!”
Failing teaches you about yourself. What you are good at, what not, what works and what doesn’t, how to handle things. Most of us are afraid to fail because we are scared of feeling bad, humiliated, embarrassed or different. So what? These are just emotions and emotions are there to be felt, even the terrible ones. What if you were not afraid to feel them? What would you go after? What would you do with your life? If you were not afraid of failing and feeling the emotions what list of things would you do or what would you go out and learn?
Till next week.
