WHAT YOU THINK IS WHAT YOU BECOME
What do you think about yourself? Do you know? Have you actually paid attention to what you say and think about yourself? Every now and again I call myself silly because I forgot something or did something wrong. Or how many of you look in the mirror and think, my thighs are too big, my tummy is too rounded? I sure have! When I catch myself doing this, I immediately go into grateful mode and it changes the negative thoughts about myself.
Take a day and just be curious about you are thinking and saying to yourself.
Don’t beat yourself up for thinking these thoughts, the whole idea is just to monitor what is going on with your thoughts. It may also be a good idea to put some of them on paper. We have up to 60 000 thoughts per day and about 70-80% of them are negative and about 90% of them are repetitive thoughts. So we end up thinking a lot of negative thoughts every day. Insane!
Good News
The good news is our thoughts can be changed, you really have to pay attention to what you are thinking. If you are just randomly thinking things, letting your mind wander, your life is going to be on default and you become what you think. If you pay attention and deliberately change what you are thinking, your whole life will change.
State of mind
For example, say you dropped a bottle of milk on the floor while getting your breakfast in the morning, you are mad at yourself, say some things that are not very kind, now you are a little off, you shout at your kids, you swear at the other drivers while driving to work and have a thunder cloud over your head at work.
Think of your state of mind, you are not happy, your kids are upset, you might have gotten some angry people hooting at you and your collegues are giving you a wide berth. All this because you dropped a bottle of milk. Can you see the knock-on effect, not just on you but on others too?
Scenario two
Alternatively, you dropped a bottle of milk, you think nothing of it, you clean it up and go about your day. You kiss your kids goodbye and head off to work, perhaps listening to an inspiring podcast or some lovely music. You will probably arrive at work with a smile on your face and have a really good day. The difference between these two scenarios was just a thought.Â
You could choose to beat yourself up because you are clumsy or distracted and make it mean something bad about you or you could just let it go. These things happen, is a thought.
A lot of us blame our circumstances for how we are thinking and feeling, things do happen and it is up to us how we want to think about it. Why would we choose the negative option, when we can choose the positive one? Again though, if someone you love dies you want to feel sad and that is OK.Â
Most of us just put a negative spin on things because that is what we have always done, but there are some people who see things as positive. What scenario’s in your life have you done this with? When you could have chosen or really thought of a better thought.
Listen to Podcasts
I just listened to a podcast this morning about having fun while achieving your goals and realized that I used to have fun at the beginning of my journey and now I have got so bogged down in the detail and getting things done, I have forgotten to have fun. It has taken a reminder like this to shake me up a bit. So ladies, I have decided that I am going to have some fun and stop taking everything so seriously. All I needed to do was change my thinking. I want to be a person who is fun.
Who do you want to be? How do you want others to see you? What are you going to have to think in order to become that person? It is a misnomer that people can’t change, people have changed their personalities, just by the way that they think.
You have this one life, how do you want to show up?
Till next week.
