What is your superpower? Blog by Antoinette from Live Life Inspired

What is your superpower?

As many of you know my son is on the Spectrum and is classified as non-verbal.  He can read and spell like a champ though and is a super thoughtful and charming little guy.  We went to his speech therapist a couple of weeks ago, where he does spelling on a board, which is how he communicates.  She did a lovely lesson with him and afterwards asked him if he had a superpower what would he choose to do?  He promptly said he would love to fly.

This got me thinking on our superpowers, because each and everyone has a superpower.  You may not recognize it as such, because to you it is easy and second nature, but someone else may find it difficult.  I am not talking about the kind of superpowers that are depicted in the movies, but rather the ones that make us special and unique in an “ordinary” way, although it is not really ordinary.

Amazing talents

Some people have amazing talents, things that they are just naturally good at, but because this comes to them naturally, they don’t work too hard at it.  But just imagine what they could do if they took that raw talent and worked and developed it into something amazing.  People at the top of their game do that.  Those super athletes, artists, musicians, people that really excel in their fields.  These people may have had some natural abilities, but they only got to the top by practicing and working some more.

There are superpowers that are not as obvious.  Perhaps you have the gift of the gab, you know just what to say at the right time to make people feel comfortable and charmed.  You may not think this is unusual, but for someone who is introverted, this is quite a skill.  It is a skill and can be learned if you put the effort in.

What is your superpower?

Another superpower is organization.  Mostly these people are top notch at getting things done and organized, yet they are normally in support positions.  It does not make it any less of a superpower though.  So if this is you, it is an amazing superpower to have.

If you are not sure what you are good at, ask the people around you what they notice about you, what they admire about you.  You will immediately know once they have said it, but sometimes it takes someone to point it out to you.

One of my friends is amazing at putting outfits together.  She will dig into my closet and put together an outfit I would never have thought to try and it looks good.  For a long time she did not have a lot of money around so she used to make the most of her wardrobe as she did not have a lot of clothes.  Yet she was and is one of the best dressed ladies I know.

Make a list of all the things you can think of that make you unique.  Fill out a whole page, even the smallest things you can think of.  You may be stumped to start with, but as you begin the list, you will think of more and more things.  Once you have got the list you can narrow it down to one or two things you think you are exceptional at.  Allow your brain to go there, no point in being modest with yourself.

Now, what is your superpower?

How can you enhance it?  What can you learn about it and make it even better?  Ask your brain some good open-ended questions and see what comes to mind.  How can you motivate others to want to learn what you know, just by being in your superpower?

One of my superpowers is discipline.  Once I set my mind to something, I just do what needs to be done.  This has helped me in a number of areas of my life and now I am purposefully using it to grow my business.  Before, I did not really think about it as a superpower until someone pointed it out.  Now I am aware of it, I am very intentional with how I use it.

Please don’t discount what you have to offer, you are amazing and your superpower is unique and very necessary in this world.
