What is your child’s passion?

What is your child’s passion?

As parents, we all want the best for our children.  We strive to provide them with opportunities to thrive, to excel, and to find happiness in their lives.  For us parents of autism that is even more challenging, but it also presents us with beautiful opportunities to discover and nurture your child’s passions.

Autism affects each child differently, often leading to intense interests or hobbies that consume their attention.  These passions can range from collecting rocks to memorizing train schedules, from drawing intricate patterns to mastering musical instruments.  Whatever form they take, these interests are not just hobbies, they are windows into your child’s world, somewhere they can express themselves and the way to learning and growing.

So how can you pay attention to your autistic child’s passion and make the best of it?

Take the time to observe your child’s behaviour closely.  Notice what activities or subjects they gravitate towards, what brings them joy and excitement and what keeps them engaged for extended periods.  Listen to their cues, both verbal and non-verbal, as they express their preferences and interests.  Sometimes it may look random.

Supporting Families with Autistic Children

As a qualified life coach and a parent of an autistic child, I bring a unique blend of professional expertise and personal understanding to my work with families dealing with autism. My journey as a parent has equipped me with firsthand insights into the challenges and triumphs that come with raising an autistic child.

I specialise in offering tailored support and compassionate guidance to families navigating similar paths.

My approach is empathetic and informed, focusing on empowering families to not only manage but also to celebrate the unique aspects of life with an autistic child. Through personalised coaching sessions, I provide effective strategies, support for enhancing family dynamics, and techniques for positive communication.

My goal is to help families foster a deeper understanding of autism and find balance and joy in their lives.

What is your child’s passion?

For Max, apart from his dinosaur, he wheels around luggage which houses a number of treasures – a hairdryer, straightner, a cube with words, a box with switches, 9 toothbrushes & 2 tubes of toothpaste.  He would collect more toothbrushes if we allowed.  What do these all have in common?  No idea, but everyday he will painstakingly pack them all out, examine them closely and put them back.  To me that says, he has an analytical brain, he likes to figure how things work and what they look like in detail.

Once you have identified your child’s passion, encourage them to explore it further.  Provide opportunities for hands-on experiences, whether it’s visiting museums, joining clubs or simply allocating time and space for them to delve deeper into their interests at home.  Play with your child, show an interest in his gadgets and ask probing questions about them to get them thinking.

Allow your child a safe space for them to pursue their interests.

This may involve setting up a designated area for their activities, stocking up on necessary supplies and establish routines that accommodate their interests.  We allow Max to move around the house with his luggage and in the afternoons we have a special time where we cuddle up on my bed and he starts unpacking his “belongings” and examining them with me.

Your child’s passion choices may seem weird to you, but I want you to embrace and recognize that it may not align with conventional expectations or societal norms and that is perfectly ok.  They are individual and they have unique perspectives that they bring to the world.  Sometimes funny, never boring.  Encourage your children, embrace their weird passions, free from judgement or pressure to conform.

Who knows perhaps there are other children to have similar passions and you can connect them.  This could be via online communities, local meetups or even reaching out to professionals or mentors in the field.  Building these networks will be great for you and your child.

Find ways to incorporate your child’s passion into a learning experience.  You can integrate it into their home activities, using it as a springboard for interdisciplinary exploration.  We know a lot about hair, teeth, electronics, dinosaurs and a variety of science based topics.  What topics can you get good at?

While it is important to support your child’s passion, also encourage flexibility and openness to new experiences.  Help them explore related interest or hobbies, expose them to diverse perspectives and activities and encourage a growth mindset.  How I do this with Max is, I ask him to choose between 2 different topics by showing him books on them and he will choose one.  We have learned a lot about space, nature, and adventure in the form of fiction.  It is a great way to make this part of their bedtime routine as well, reading to them.

Remember your attitude towards your child’s passion sets the tone for how they perceive themselves and their interest.  Model acceptance, empathy and open-mindedness, demonstrating that you value and respect their unique strengths and talents.

If you are unsure how to best support your child’s passion or if their interests present challenges that require specialized assistance, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from professionals.  I can help you identify what your child’s passions are how you can expand on them to help your child.

It’s more than just nurturing a hobby, it’s about affirming their identity, fostering their self-confidence and empowering them to thrive in their own unique way.

Till next week.
