What do you want?

You get to a certain age and this is normally the big 0’s, 30, 40, 50, etc, and you reevaluate your life.  What have you been doing, where you are right now?  And are you where you want to be?  Most of us figure that we could have done more or that we are not happy where we are.

This is not the time to beat yourself up about where you are or what you should have done or not done.  Just be curious and evaluate.  Things that have happened in the past, are just that, in the past.  Nothing is going to change that.  What you can change and plan for is your future. 

I have started doing this every year now.  I list the things that happened during the year, then evaluate what went well, what didn’t and what steps I can take to change things that didn’t go according to plan.  I also do a Desire Download.  These are all the things I would like to do, places I want to go, what I want to be and I include my business in this as well.  I go crazy on this list, whatever my heart desires.

I do this exercise with all my clients who do my Day One Program and it is so interesting what comes up for them.  Most people are really to scared to dream, to wish for extraordinary things for their lives.  It is almost as if they need permission to dream big.  I like to then compare my list to the last year to see what stays the same and what I no longer want on there and what is new.

I encourage you to do this list.  What do you really want? 

There is no wrong answer here.  You get to want whatever you want, without apology.  If you want a pink Ferrari, by all means put that down.  This list is just for you.  Make it fun.  You will get resistance to some of your ideas, but remember this is just your primitive brain trying to keep you small and safe. 

Now a lot of you may want to put “I just want to be happy” on your list and while this seems like a good goal, it is kind of flimsy.  Ask yourself what do you think will make you happy?  And what does happy mean to you?  Cause we all know many people who have a lot of money and things, that are not happy.  Being happy should not be your end goal, but rather the side effect of the things that you do.

Everybody’s idea of happiness looks different.  Some people want to live on a boat and travel the seas.  Honestly I could not think of anything worse….as I get sea sick.  Others want to help people and have very little in the way of possessions, some want to be very wealthy and top of their fields.  Define your version of happiness and do those things.

What do you want?

You may decide you want to do something and once you have done it, it’s not quite what you thought.  This is OK.  You didn’t waste time.  You figured out something that you did not like and scratched it off your list.  Now you concentrate on the things you do want.  I always say that you more often regret the things you didn’t do than the things you did.

Please don’t spin in confusion when you start doing your list and say “I don’t know”.  What if you did know?  For inspiration, look at people you do admire.  It could be celebrities, someone from work, your friends or someone you read about.  Figure out what you like about them or what they do and put that on your list. 

What kind of things would you like to try? 

You may surprise yourself.  I have clients who are 40/50 who started painting and flower arranging and are really good at it.  They did not think they were creative, but they followed their curiosities and tried something new.

Get to know yourself.  Ask yourself what you really want.  What is important to you right now and what things would you like to change?

You have this one life to live, why not make it count?
