What choices are you making?
Life, they say, is a series of choices. Every decision, whether big or small, shapes the path we walk, the people we become, and the stories we tell. But have you ever stopped to consider the significance of your choices? It’s not just about what happens to us, but more importantly, about the choices we make in response to what happens to us.
Our lives are made up of many daily choices. From the moment we wake up, we are faced with decisions that, altogether define our day and ultimately our life’s narrative. What to wear, what to eat, how to respond to challenges and how to prioritise our time – these are all choices that influence our well-being and our sense of fulfillment.
One of the best things in life, is the freedom to choose. Choice is a gift that allows us to create our destinies, pursue our dreams and shape our realities. It’s a reminder that we have the power to influence our own lives.
Primitive brain
I have spoken on many occasions about our primitive brain and our prefrontal cortex, which translates into our intentional and our default choices. Intentional choices are made with your prefrontal cortex and made with purpose, they are guided by your values, desires and dreams. They reflect a conscious awareness of what matters the most to you.
On the other hand, your default choices made by your primitive brain are those made without conscious thought. They are driven by routine, habit or things outside of you. Default choices lead you to a sense of drifting through life without a clear sense of direction.
Our choices, therefore matter, big time. Making choices from an intentional viewpoint can lead to fulfillment, purpose and joy. Those made on default are not in line with our true desires and may lead to stress, feeling out of sync with our authentic selves and don’t get you anywhere.
What choices are you making?
A few short years ago, I decided to take charge of my life. I was done complaining and getting results that were nowhere near what I wanted for myself. One of the first small decisions I made was to stop watching TV every night and to start working on my blog. I made a conscious choice which may seem small, but on the whole changed my life completely.
Take into consideration that mindfulness is a significant practice that you can make to enhance your ability to make intentional choices. This means you need to be fully present in the moment which allows you to make decision with greater awareness. Mindful choices are more likely to be in harmony with our true selves.
It is also important to be very clear about your values. What matters most to you in life? Is it family, career, personal growth, money or something else? Understanding your values will help you align your choices with what truly resonates with your heart.

Hi, I’m Antoinette Porter, your hostess at Live Life Inspired where we will explore what is possible in your life. A life you can look back on and say, “Wow!! I did that!”
Some choices are going to be more important than others. Prioritising what matters most is key. Sometimes you may have some small decision to make, but in making it you are perhaps deciding against what is really important to you. Pay attention. It’s about allocating your time, energy and resources to the things and people that align with your values and goals.
Life is going to happen, you are going to have setbacks and challenges. How are you going to respond? You can choose to see challenges as opportunities to grow, learn, find answers, change things in your life and embrace a positive attitude. Or you can choose to let them knock you about and become the victim. It’s a choice.
In my line of work, personal growth is intimately tied to the choices we make. Intentional choice often involve stepping outside our comfort zone, trying new things, getting coaching and learning. You make a choice for the future you, you are voting for the future you.

Choices also shape our relationships. How we communicate, how we respond to conflict and how we prioritise our loved ones are all decisions that influence the quality of our connections. Intentional choices can lead to more harmonious and fulfilling relationships.
Life changes, our values and dreams evolve. Keep making your choices to reflect these. Choices are the bridge between your dreams and your reality, between your present and your future. Embrace the power of your choices, they will shape your life in wonderful ways.
Till next week.
