Wanting what you have

Our brains are naturally negative thinkers, it wants to keep us safe, so it will also make you think that you will never have enough and that you should hoard, protect and grab hold of what you can.  This is the basic part of your brain.  Yet we also have an evolved part of our brain, where we can make plans for our future and decide how we want to think and act.

I want you to tap into that evolved part of your brain now.  We like to think we are quite an evolved species, but sometimes you have to wonder…lol. Humans are the only species that has the capabilities to plan for our futures and also to make choices that can affect our lives, in some cases, dramatically.

Advertising Bombarding

When you look at magazines and TV and all the advertising around you, you are constantly bombarded with images to buy this thing or that procedure or do that thing.  There are very sophisticated algorithms involved in these ads.  Most of the time they are geared to make you feel inadequate and only if you buy this thing, will you be whole or beautiful or rich or….fill in the blank.  So most of us are continually wanting more.

Now there is nothing with wanting more and wanting to better your life, but here is where you bring your in sophisticated brain.  Where you consciously decide what it is that you really want and need.  You need to decide exactly how you want your life to look like and what and who you want in it.  It is not for the media to decide that for you.

Wanting what you have

We actually need very little, but most of us want a lot of things and only because that is what we are told to want.  I just wrapped up the 5 week Declutter Your Life Workshop and in there I urged my participants to really let go of stuff and create space for the things that they really want.  I don’t know about you, but on a lot of occasions I thought I wanted something and upon getting that thing I was not all that impressed.  When I delved a little deeper about what my motivation was for wanting that thing, it was always because someone else said I should have it.

Because we get so much information and advertising thrown our way, we go numb and stop thinking for ourselves.  We stop thinking about what it is that we really want in our lives, what lights us up.  Another exercise I had the participants in the Declutter Your Life Workshop do, is really appreciate the things that you do have in your life.  After you declutter, sit with what you do have.  Some find it really hard to do the decluttering, that it is hard work and no fun.  But if you appreciate that you have things to declutter, you have a home to clean, you have clothes to launder, you have to drive to work which means you have a car and a job.

Think about what you really do want

Don’t look to the outside and use that to feel inferior or less than, because you don’t have the latest phone, or a big pool like the neighbours.  On second thoughts you may not want a pool, they are a pain to maintain and often don’t get used that often.  Think about what you really do want.  There are pro’s and con’s to everything you see and do.

For example, I love to travel, I love the excitement of going to new places, meeting new people and enjoying the different cultures.  Some people hate travelling, they can’t be dealing with flying and jetlag and living out of a suitcase and different kinds of food.  For me, the con’s are worth it.  If you don’t like travelling, don’t do it, no matter how much advertising and pressure you get from the outside world to have all these experiences.  What you may love, is being home and writing or cooking.  Do that.

If you manage to fill your life with only the things you really want, you may have a greater appreciation for them, because you decided on those things deliberately.  For now, want and appreciate the things you do have in your life, even the not so good things and find the pro’s in those.

Till next week.
