TO DO LISTS

I think most of us have a to do list right?  And then we get to tick off the things we have done or scratch them off the list.  Makes us feel most productive, like we are getting things done.  But are we?  Do our lists not get longer and longer as we bump things to the next day because we could not finish them today?  Is this really effective time management?

How about we try a slightly different method to make the most of our time and create the life we want, because we only have this one life and we want to make the most of it!  First thing to remember – we all have enough time.  For all of you who say you are too busy, not true!  You are just not good at managing your time.  Just think about how you different your life would be if you did everything you said you were going to do, if you showed up for yourself, if you took action when you said you would.

You can do that, you have the greatest tool in the world to help you with that – your brain.  You have the ability to plan and then to follow through.  Yet we don’t always utilize this wonderful gift, we let ourselves down, we go for the instant gratification, then we give up because it is easier.  But would you not like to be a woman who says you are going to do something, you do it, you keep your promises to yourself?  This way you get to create the life you want, you get to grow your self-confidence, because you can trust yourself to follow through.

  • Every Monday morning, or Sunday evening would even be better, write down everything you want to, have to and should do for the week. Just dump all of it onto a sheet of paper, get it all out of your head.  There is something quite calming about putting everything down on paper, it gives your brain some space and calm.
  • Next, you take a break! You deserve it, have a cup of tea, then get back to it.
  • Next to each to do point, write any obstacle that may come up. Eg I have to have my outdoor chairs reweaved (is that a word?), you know when the plastic weaving has broken due to sun exposure? I had no idea who does that kind of thing (obstacle), so I had to do some research to find someone who does it.  Once I found someone, I had to arrange to deliver the chairs, pay for them once it was done and then collect them again.  All of this goes on the list.  See now it’s all on paper and your brain isn’t clogged up with thinking all these little steps, it’s free to think other things.
  • You may think that this is so time consuming, and yes the first few times you do it, it will be, because there is a lot of stuff going on in that brain of yours. After a while though there will be less and less stuff.

  • Now this may be a bit scary, but you do not have to do anything on this list, nothing, if you don’t want to. Look at each item and decide.  Yes, you may have certain consequences if you do not do certain things, but then decide to be OK with that.  You don’t have to go invite your neighbour over for supper, I didn’t have to have my chairs repaired, you don’t have to go away over Christmas holidays.  Decide to cross it off your list and let it go or give it to someone else to do.
  • Then prioritise your list, pick the most important things and put them in your calendar first and then the rest. This will take time, but it is super important and the secret to success.  A lot of you ladies will say that this is so restrictive, planning your day literally minute by minute, but I can tell you it’s the opposite.  It gives you so much more freedom.  Of course, you plan your free time as well.  Once you know, your brain knows what to expect, when things are going to be done, you relax, you take the stress out of the system completely.
  • Now throw that list away. You have everything on your calendar. If you are not sure how long something will take, just decide.  The chances are you will be able to complete it in the time you allocated to it.  To give yourself a bit of motivation, decide on a back-up plan, like if you don’t complete it within an hour, you will do it in your free time. Now, I don’t know about you, but I kinda like my free time!
  • The next step is to actually show up for your calendar. Say I have decided that at 2pm I am going to write my blog.  When 2pm rolls around, I’m going to want to make a quick phone call, or make a cup of tea, anything but sitting down and writing my blog.  But I have already decided ahead of time that I would write my blog at 2pm, so that is what I will do.  It takes practice to get there, but each time you do it, your brain will get used to you doing what you say you’re going to do.
