Take notes

I was just listening to a podcast on consuming.  It was mostly on consciously consuming media, books, podcasts, etc.  What a lot of us do is consume mindlessly.  We just listen to the news, the radio, we have the TV on in the background or we scroll through social media without any agenda.  And this is all totally fine, if that’s what you want to do.

Mostly though we want to be a bit more purposeful with our time (I hope), because it is such a precious resource and perhaps we don’t want the feeling of fear and stress because we are listening to the radio or negative media.  But this is something you get to decide.  You decide what you want to listen to, you decide what you let in and how you spend your time.

I don’t ever listen to the news or even have the radio on in the car and it does wonders for my mood.  I notice when I am in the car with someone else and they have the radio on, it feels like I am taking on the worlds’ troubles.  Now perhaps you want to be informed, and that is fine, because it is a choice.  I believe that if there is something I need to know, someone will tell me and if I want to know more, I can turn on the radio.

Mostly I tend to listen to podcasts about things I want to learn about, coaching, business, money, emotions, relationships and every so often when the mood takes me, music.  I do consume a lot of things especially if I am commuting, but I still find that most of it doesn’t really sink in.  It changes my mood and yes I do learn some concepts, but not as much as if I am really paying attention and not doing anything else.

Take Notes

To really take advantage of books and podcasts and videos, you really have to take notes.  Now you may never look at those notes again, but the action of taking notes really helps your mind focus, understand and absorb concepts.  I sometimes listen to podcasts and really want to focus on what they are trying to teach and if I am not able to take notes, I will typically relisten when I am in a quiet place and take notes.

When you are reading books, it is a little easier to do this as you are generally in a quieter environment and you could highlight sections in the book, if it belongs to you, and take some notes.

It has been found that if you want to change your life, learn new habits or achieve a new goal, only 3% of those people will manage to do it.  The reason for this is that they put down in writing what it is that they want to do.  The act of writing it down seems to cement the idea and thereby making it more real.  Of course, there are some other factors at play, but writing down what you want is present in those 3% of people who succeed.

Sometimes I have the best ideas when I am driving in my car and have found that by the time I have reached my destination I have forgotten them.  So now I make a note of it.  Sometimes with a note, if it’s safe enough to do or a voice note (thank you Siri).

We are all so creative and unique and we all get the opportunity to do and create something special.  Take advantage of your ideas, take notes from things you hear or read, you never know where they could lead to.

So instead of consuming mindlessly, take advantage of things that you really want to learn about and take notes to let the ideas sink in, to your creative centre.
