Quitting on purpose

I’m a pretty tenacious person.  When I get my teeth into something, it takes a lot for me to let go.  I might add, even when I know it is not in my best interests.  This is how you learn your lessons dear friends.

Nobody likes to think of themselves as quitters.  We like to think that we have the strength to continue on our destined paths and to be a success in everything we start.  For a variety of reasons this does not happen.  Sometimes it’s not up to us, and life sends us down another path or we get a better opportunity.

You need to know who you are and really know what it is that you want

You need to be able to go down one path and when you realise it is not the path for you, do a 180 or head in another direction.  It took me a long time to realise that it was ok to back out of commitments I had made when I realized they were not for me.  This is what smart, strong people do.  There was a time when I would go down a path because I made a commitment and because I value commitments to myself highly, continued going, even though it was apparent to me and everyone around me, that it was the wrong one.

This is the time to have so much compassion for yourself.  It is ok to think that things would work out or that you have chosen correctly, but it was just not meant to be.  The smart thing to do in this case, is to re-evaluate.  What is going right with the decisions that you have made and which have not.  This is a good habit to practice even if you are on the “right” path.  Always evaluate regularly so that you can be certain that you are heading in the direction of your dreams.  There are often times when you have to course correct.

Quitting on purpose

There is not just one way to get from A to B.  Of course we want to choose the quickest and most obvious path, but if there are obstacles in the road, you either need to overcome them if you can or pick another route.  Don’t just give up altogether.

Quitting on purpose can be a good thing, as mentioned above.  If you are not aligned with your values or on the path of your dreams you can let things go and start afresh or course correct.

Quitting on purpose can also sneak up on you and very rarely do you realise that that is exactly what you have done.  Say for example, you are trying to lose weight.  You have your meal plan, your workout regime, what you are going to do when you have cravings, you have made a decision about all of these things and you are committed.

But your husband comes home and surprises you with a weekend away in the mountains.  You are going to a cute little cabin with a fireplace.  He is packing all the comfort foods and you pack all the things you need to be able to stay on your meal plan.  But on the weekend you have some hot chocolate with marshmallows, perhaps have some sherry and you have some delicious pancakes covered in maple syrup.  When you get home, you have a little of this and a little of that, thinking I will start on my weight loss plan tomorrow.  What you did right there, was quit on purpose.  You quit to have the hot chocolate.  You quit to have the sherry.

Now most of us don’t think much of those seemingly small decisions we made at the time.  You may have thought I will start eating healthy again when I get home and it was a fleeting thought as you thought about those pancakes.  But that small decision was one you made on purpose and they can very easily derail you to give up your dream if you are not aware of it.

Quitting on purpose

Your whole life is made up of millions of decisions, small decisions every single day.  The majority of those decisions, you make every single day without even realizing it.  If you want to change your life and become a different person who does things differently, you have to change the decisions you make.  The wonderful thing is that it is possible.  Make decisions on purpose and be aware of quitting on purpose.

Till next week.
