My StoryThere IS life while parenting autism
You’re a devoted parent who wants the absolute best for your child. You’re doing everything you can — yet somehow, it still feels impossible to balance it all.
- The constant demands of parenting a child with autism leave you drained, with little energy for yourself.
- Your own goals are on the back burner, or maybe you’re so busy you’ve forgotten what they even are.
The result? A cycle of exhaustion, frustration, and guilt. You’re running on empty, not fully present for your child, and not showing up for yourself either.
I know that cycle — and I know how to end it.
My Story
My journey began with a breathtaking twist—a precious arrival 12 weeks earlier than expected. That was the day I met Max, my resilient, tenacious, and endlessly joyous son. His arrival wasn’t just an event; it was the genesis of countless life lessons that awaited me.
Max’s journey began in the hospital, spending nine months in the ICU, navigating a maze of diagnoses, surgeries, and transfusions. During those challenging times, I discovered reservoirs of strength within myself that I never knew existed.
Despite the hurdles, Max’s spirit shone brightly. Even on oxygen for an additional six months after coming home, he thrived. His delayed milestones didn’t dim his joyfulness, and he remained an absolute delight.
Curious and energetic nature
However, at 3.5 years old, as his curious and energetic nature blossomed, differences became apparent. His progression differed from his peers, leading to a tumultuous school experience filled with misunderstandings. Despite seeking guidance from professionals, the reality of Max’s autism was not initially acknowledged, leaving us both in a puzzling limbo.
My quest for answers led me to a pivotal moment—a conversation with a friend of my brother’s who recognized Max’s condition unequivocally. Although it was a shock, deep down, I had sensed something was amiss. It was disheartening that the professionals involved hadn’t presented this possibility earlier.
The journey continued, filled with visits to specialists, trials of medications, and attempts at various therapies. Max’s frustration manifested in behaviors that baffled us, but a remarkable speech therapist became a beacon of hope. Through Spell 2 Communicate, Max found his voice, and a transformation blossomed. His intelligence and ability to read since the age of three stunned us, revealing a brilliant mind.
Transitioning to a new school embracing Spell 2 Communicate and finding a pediatrician specializing in autism and ADHD marked a turning point. Adjusting medications brought forth a different Max—one whose unique personality radiated without frequent meltdowns. Now, at 8 years old, we revel in neurotypical activities, cherishing each step forward.
My Journey: Finding Strength and Purpose
My life seemingly began anew with Max’s arrival. The experiences, emotions, and challenges reshaped me into a person I never imagined I could be. Witnessing Max’s fight for life during his hospital stay, I chose to be there daily, even if it meant visiting twice a day. It was a time when my health deteriorated due to stress, but I kept pushing forward, trusting the universe to provide.
Struggling with health issues, I realized the importance of self-care. Taking Saturdays for myself became a small yet significant change. Despite the guilt, I knew that caring for myself was essential to care for Max.
This journey led me to coaching, seeking ways to manage my thoughts and emotions while supporting Max. Coaching became a beacon, guiding me through the rough patches and making life easier, not just for me but for Max as well. Autism no longer dominates our lives; adjustments have been made, but it’s no longer a barrier.
Transitioning into coaching was a natural progression
Now, I support moms navigating similar journeys, realizing that my experiences have given me the insight to make a difference. Life isn’t perfect, but it’s transformed in unimaginable ways. With an incredible fiancé, preparing to relocate to the States, and improved health, I embrace a life filled with gratitude and hope.
Join me on this journey of resilience, empathy, and empowerment, where challenges are embraced, and every step forward is celebrated.
Warm regards, Antoinette
