Lessons from 2023
Lessons from 2023
Welcome to 2024. May it be the best year yet. I always like to reflect on the past year. What went well. What didn’t. What did I learn. What could I change. How can I make the next year better. It’s not about fixing but more about creating the life I want. We need to remember we are not broken, we are just constantly learning and growing and creating.
So I want to share my lessons from 2023 and hopefully this will inspire you to do the same.
My first lesson is being patient
My man tells me I am the nicest gal until I get in my car and then I get so impatient and I kinda feel it is OK, right? I get to vent and shout at other drivers without having to face the consequences. I do not let it affect my driving though. I do allow people to get in front of me and I don’t make any rude signals. No, my impatience is mostly for the too slow drivers in the fast lane. So an area I am working on.
This year felt a lot like just doing a lot of work without obvious rewards. I had to remind myself that everything happens on its own time. I can do all the things, for sure, but there are just some things I do not have control over. Another reminder to me was that sometimes you have to build, put processes in place, do the ground work in order to set the foundation for bigger things and this takes patience.
Supporting Families with Autistic Children
As a qualified life coach and a parent of an autistic child, I bring a unique blend of professional expertise and personal understanding to my work with families dealing with autism. My journey as a parent has equipped me with firsthand insights into the challenges and triumphs that come with raising an autistic child.
I specialise in offering tailored support and compassionate guidance to families navigating similar paths. My approach is empathetic and informed, focusing on empowering families to not only manage but also to celebrate the unique aspects of life with an autistic child. Through personalised coaching sessions, I provide effective strategies, support for enhancing family dynamics, and techniques for positive communication.
My goal is to help families foster a deeper understanding of autism and find balance and joy in their lives.
Lessons from 2023
As autistic moms we know that we often put in a lot of hard work teaching our kiddos things and we don’t see quick results. It often takes a lot longer to achieve any kind of result and we do tend to give up and of course this is when we have to keep going. We have to stay the course and we just have to realise that patience is the order of the day.
My second lesson is to focus more on my health. This past year I have really battled with my energy levels. I am pretty much ok in the morning but come the afternoon, I can barely get myself to do anything. So I want to change that. I have a full year this year and I want to utilize my time effectively to get to all the things I want to do.
We are moving to the US soon and I am relaunching my coaching business, so I need the energy to get us settled in to our home, our community, my son into school and then I also need to concentrate on my business.
I already do quite well with my workouts, but I want to uplevel them and then I want to eat nourishing foods which give me energy. So this is one of my personal goals for the new year.
Lesson 3:
Leave other people’s business to them. You know the saying: Not my circus. Not my monkey. I have been part of a process which really was not my doing and while I tried to assist and give support and encouragement, I somehow became responsible for things that were not my responsibility. This of course, (or my thoughts about it) caused quite a bit of stress and I took the eye off my ball, what was important to me. A lesson to remind me that you cannot take responsibility for others’ doings.
My fourth lesson:
Is do what works for me and not what I think I should do. In other words, follow my intuition. In November, I was lucky enough to attend a coaching event in New Orleans. My intention was to meet people and I did meet the most amazing like-minded women. As I may have mentioned before I am quite the introvert and it took a lot of energy to do this. But thinking I was in New Orleans, I “should” go out and explore so I arranged to go on an evening boat cruise with some of the ladies.

What I should have done, was just stay in my hotel room, order room service and recharge for the next day. I did not and the result was being so exhausted I did not enjoy the cruise or the company very much. A good lesson to listen to your body.
My last lesson is I need to be the person I want before it happens. I want to be calm and an example to my son. He had quite a challenging time these holidays and I really wanted him to be calmer, but I was not and kept getting upset with him. Until I realized I needed to be calm first and then he would be, which is exactly what happened. You have to be it before you have it.
I would love to hear your takeaways from this last year and I wish you a prosperous and happy New Year.
Till next week.
