LESSONS FROM 2020
What a year it has been. It has been frightening, it has turned our lives upside down, yet it has also been amazing and an awakening of sorts.
I think it is important to reflect on the past year and see what has worked for you and what hasn’t. At the beginning of the year I think a lot of us were excited to see what this new year would have in store for us, some of us would have made goals, made plans to travel, start new businesses, grow existing businesses, etc. What happened next through everyone for a loop. None of us could have foreseen that the year would go the way it did.
Panic
Some people panicked, some had to change direction and others had to make do in a tough situation. Some people bloomed, some took charge and other realized they were stronger than they had ever thought possible. While people spun in confusion, the world, our earth breathed a sigh of relief. It had a chance to rest and recoup. For a lot of people this was the case too, they got out of the rat race and had to work from home. Again for some this was immensely satisfying, they got a lot done without the usual interruptions, they also had more time on their hands as they did not spend as much time in traffic. Others had to deal with working in addition to looking after small children or homeschooling.
My Experience
Like everyone else I also went into lockdown with my autistic son. It was the most maddening and satisfying time. We had to learn to be together, I had to be present for him the entire time and we grew so much closer because of it. At night after he went to sleep I did some work and carved out some me time. I did a lot of reflecting on my life, what I was allowing which did not serve me and to think of what I did want. This blog was born in that moment and has led me to so many wonderful people and teachings.
I have never been a news watcher, so it was relatively easily for me to limit my time watching and listening to all the horrible statistics and stories. I knew that if I let myself go down that rabbit hole, I would go into panic mode and I just couldn’t afford to do that, especially not with my highly sensitive son, who depends on me to be calm and his rock. I made the decision to control what was allowed into my life, I decided to set goals, I achieved them and set some more. I didn’t abandon what I set out to do, I just upped the ante. You decide how you want to feel about the things that are happening, the facts of this pandemic, don’t let other people do that for you.
Negatively affected
You may say that a lot of people have been negatively affected by this pandemic and you would be right, but there are those that used it positively
(you know the proverbial lemons into lemonade),
people stepped up to help the less fortunate, people created businesses, people become leaders. My feeling is why not ask questions like: how can I make this year the best ever? What can I create? What value can I give?
How did this year make us better? How did this happen for us, not against us? These are great questions to ask to move forward and to grow. If you have not thought about it this way, do so in 2021 and see where your story leads you.
Another lesson I learnt was that it did not serve me to play small. I was hiding, I did not want to use my voice and it negatively effected me and how I was living my life. Yes there are going to be people who do not like me or what I do and that is OK, but there are so many who do, who have been so supportive. Every person is responsible for their own happiness, there is nothing you can do to make another person happy, you will always fall short. The only way is to live your truth and take care of your own happiness, then that energy passes on to others.
I also made some pretty big decisions this year. I still find myself freaking out about them every now and then, but I now know it’s just my brain trying to keep me in it’s cozy little comfort zone. How cute is my brain being all protective…? The most important thing is that I have my own back on my decisions, I am committed and so excited. In order to grow and have an amazing life you have to make big, audacious decisions. I want to write and live my own extraordinary story.
More about my big decisions in the New Year because I would love you to join me on the journey.
I am hoping that by letting you in on my personal lessons, that it would have helped you to do the same or at least give it some serious thought. What have your lessons been?
