How to rise above office politics

If you work in an office, no matter how big or small, you are going to encounter some form of office politics.  You may be directly involved in it or watch it from a distance.  It is inevitable when people work together that there is going to be friction, different thought patterns and ways of doing things.

My no one rule if you in any way get involved in a squabble is to just stick to the facts.  What often happens is, you have a situation and it very often excalates to being very personal, which is never a good idea.  So sticking to the facts of the situation, you rise above the petty name calling and blaming.  By staying calm in the situation, you get to diffuse any heated situation.

Gossiping in the office

Inevitably you will also see a lot of gossiping going on.  Do not engage.  Walk away.  If people feel the need to gossip with you, what does that say about you?  It means you are open to it and guaranteed you will at some point be the subject of gossip yourself.  Even if you are, the best policy is to just ignore it.

You will find that there are also going to be people that do not do their share of the work.  This is not your problem, unless they are a member of your team and it directly affects your work.  If it is a collegue and you do feel that there is reason to bring up the subject, you can go to your superior and address it in a positive manner.  Whether they do something about it, is up to them.  If not, you have to manage your mind around what is happening.  You cannot force anyone to do anything.  The only person you can control is yourself.

In this case, I always advocating being an example and doing your job the best that you can, this is in your control.  By doing this, you may actually inspire the other person to start doing the same.  They will see the benefits of your results and hopefully want the same for themselves.

How to rise above office politics

Working in an office, your work is also going to be criticized at some point.  Instead of seeing this as a negative thing, turn it into a learning experience.  We never know how to do something perfectly at the beginning, but by practicing and hard work, we can do something very well.  So if you are being reviewed, be curious.  Leave your ego behind and listen to what you could be doing better.

Now you may think the way you are doing something is the better way and you may convey that, but if you are working for someone else and they want you to do it their way and they have good reasons for it, you should consent.  Listen, it may not be the best way, in your opinion, but you are being paid to do the job the way they want it and when you have your own business you can do it anyway you want.

By being open and curious, you will learn a lot more as to how to improve your performance and you will be known as the person who is willing and motivated to learn and guess what?  They will more likely come to you for advice and that promotion.

How to rise above office politics ~ Blog
We have all worked in situations that were not ideal.

I worked in a law office briefly and let’s just say I did not get along with my boss and was not happy with the ethics of the company, so I left.  I did not make it mean anything, it just was not a good fit for me and did not want to work in this kind of environment.  You have to decide what you are able to deal with or not.  If it compromises your values, you are better off finding something else.

By far, the most important thing you can do on a daily basis is to be grateful that you have work and can go into an office.  Your attitude is everything.  Having the right attitude will make your days so much easier and enjoyable.  You will be a pleasure to work with and you will start affecting the people around you positively.

What could you do today, to elevate your office experience?  A good question to ask yourself every day.

Till next week.
