How to lose weight for the last time

If you knew how to lose the weight and keep it off forever, how would you feel?  What kind of money would you invest?  What kind of time and emotional energy would you invest?  If you had to do this for the last time?  How committed would you be?

Losing weight is such a controversial issue.

There are so many diets on the market and they all work and don’t work.  What do I mean by this?  There are people that have success with a specific diet and other people with another diet.  The thing is, losing weight has nothing to do with the diet and everything to do with your mindset.

The main reason you are overweight is because you consume more than you need.  However, each person is different and will respond differently to foods.  It is important to note what works with your body, what are your patterns, what are your habits, what is going on with you physically and emotionally.

Not in tune with your body

Most people overeat because they are not in tune with their bodies.  They don’t know if they are hungry or not, if they are eating out of comfort or just because it is dinner time.  You need to start tuning in with yourself and answer these questions for yourself before you eat. 

There are also various hormones to consider and how they react when you eat or don’t and are at the root of why you are hungry all the time.  The topic of hormones is a whole blog on it’s own so I won’t go into details with those right now.

Root cause

Now we need to get to the root cause of your overeating.  If you try to cut back on food or try eating less with just willpower, it ain’t gonna work.  What happens then?  You actually increase your desire for food or you feel deprived.  Those desires are actually created in your mind e.g. I deserve that, it tastes so good, I will feel better if I eat it.  The more you give in to these kind of thoughts, the more you reward that desire with food.

Often people eat to numb themselves, they don’t want to feel their feelings so they cover them up with food or drink.  Now how do you start reducing the desire for food?  Give up sugar and flour and design yourself a food plan. Decide ahead of time what you are going to eat and how much.  By doing this you will start to balance the hormones in your body so that they can start working the way they should.

Committed to this process

These are the physical actions you can take.  The next thing is you need to decide if you are committed to this process.  That is the difference between someone who loses the weight and someone who doesn’t.  You can’t just decide that you want to “try” and lose weight, you have to be all in.

Let’s go back to the reason you are overeating.  What are you trying to avoid?  What emotion are you not facing? If you are not sure what the answer is, stop having that second helping, stop having that dessert.  What uncomfortable feeling comes up?  That is the feeling you are avoiding.  And it is not so terrible if you just allow it.  It is only a vibration in your body, feel it, process it and you will lose the urge to eat to cover it up.

Deal with the consequences

By resisting your feelings or avoiding them, you now not only have to deal with the consequences of that, but you overeat causing you to have a weight problem and health problems as well.  That just sounds terrible, doesn’t it?  It does not have to be this way.  Just work on feeling your emotions.

How do you do this?
  • Imagine you have to describe this feeling you have to someone from Mars (who we assume does not know what feelings are about). Where do you feel it in your body?
  • Watch the feeling as if you are sitting across from it. What are you thinking about it?
  • Hold the feeling, accept it, be with it.
  • Be open to the feeling and just allow it.
