How to have meaningful relationships

Not long ago, I received an invitation to a gathering where the host claimed they were inviting their “100 closest friends.” It got me thinking: Can one genuinely maintain meaningful relationships with such a vast number of people? The answer, it seems, is not really. True connections demand time and energy, making it impractical to sustain hundreds of them simultaneously.

Recently, I attended a funeral, a bittersweet occasion that allowed me to reconnect with family and friends I hadn’t seen in ages. Amid the sadness, I found joy in these rekindled relationships, especially one with a childhood friend who lives far away. Our bond has stayed strong, and I reflected on why.

Friendships

The key ingredient, I realized, is vulnerability. In our friendship, we’ve always been open, honest, and emotionally transparent. This vulnerability allows us to instantly reconnect, transcending time and distance. Meaningful relationships thrive when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable.

Often, people believe that friendships and relationships should last a lifetime. When such bonds fade, disappointment and hurt can follow. Yet, it’s essential to accept that people come and go in your life. Some stay for the long haul, while others are fleeting. Even short-term relationships have their purpose, and letting them go when the time is right is a natural part of life’s ebb and flow.

While it may be tempting to hold onto one-sided relationships, it’s not worth the effort. In a healthy relationship, both parties contribute, offering support and understanding. If you find yourself consistently investing more time and energy than the other person, it might be time to reassess the relationship’s balance.

Love is another fundamental element in all relationships. Love takes on different forms in various relationships, but it should always be present. Love is accepting, open, and understanding. It’s a vital component of connections that truly matter.

Don’t forget about the relationships with intangible aspects of your life. Your business, for example, can be seen as a separate entity, one that you work in and on, but not one that defines you entirely. It’s an intriguing perspective to consider the relationship you have with your business.

Last week, we discussed our relationship with money and the idea of treating it as if it were a person. It’s a fascinating concept, prompting us to evaluate how we engage with our finances.

How to have meaningful relationships

In our lives, we have various relationships—romantic, friendships, business, community, and everyday interactions. Ask yourself: How are you connecting with these individuals or aspects of life? Are you investing time and energy into them? If not, why? Prioritizing the most significant relationships in your life is crucial.

Fulfilling relationships don’t happen by chance. They require effort, nurturing, and attention. When you invest in them, you’ll witness their growth, showering you with kindness, warmth, and love.

Until next week,
