How to feel less overwhelmed

Some of us are luckier than others in this department.  You have all met that one person who lets nothing fase them.  They are not in a rush, they take their time, they do things in their own time and they are so calm.  No matter how much the world is rushing around them, they just go about their business as though they have all the time in the world.  I am irritated and admire them all at the same time.

Obviously if I want them to do something pronto and they just do things in their own time, I wish I could move them along quicker.  Yet I admire the fact that nothing rushes them and if you really think about it, there is no reason to rush.  If you think the thought “there is no rush” whether you are stuck in traffic or have a deadline, you would probably relax and get everything done in good time.

Our world is all about doing and rushing and on to the next thing.  No wonder we struggle with overwhelm and as a result we don’t get done what we want to do or we become stuck.  We have to purposefully take action and change the sentences in our mind to assist us in not going into overwhelm.

I will give you a couple of tips which help me, you can do any one or all or as many as you can manage. 

Any of these will help you. 

How to feel less overwhelmed

Give yourself more than enough time to do things.  In my Day One Program I show you how to manage your time, by adding all your tasks and meetings, etc to your calendar.  So every morning you open your calendar and you will see everything you need to do and how long you have to do them.  Do not disrespect yourself by not honouring your time limits.  If you know you have a meeting across town, leave in plenty of time to make it.

Of course, there are going to be times when you will be caught in traffic and these days we have load shedding to contend with as well.  Give yourself enough time.  If you do get caught despite your best efforts, it is no use stressing, there is nothing you can do to make the traffic move.  The best thing you can do is relax.  Make the phone call to say you are going to be running late, because you also do not want to disrespect the other party who will be waiting for you.

Choose some good music or listen to a podcast, and before you know it, you will have reached your destination.

If you have a work deadline, do not wait for the last minute and then get cracking.  This is a sure way to overwhelm.  Ask yourself why you are leaving it to the last minute?  Give yourself plenty of time to do the work and if something unforeseen pops up, you have time to deal with it.  Again if it is last minute and you have done everything you can to get it to the end point, it is out of your control.  Out of your control means there is nothing you can do about it, so stressing about it will not help you.  Being overwhelmed does not serve you or what you are trying to do.  It just results in less than stellar work and getting yourself worked up.

Best thing to do is take a step back, physically and mentally.  Take a deep breath and pay attention to what you are thinking.  You will probably find you are thinking things like…”I am late”, “I don’t know what to do”, “This is too much”, “I can’t handle this”, “I’m never going to finish in time”.  Just talking about these thoughts is constricting my throat. 

Now what if you were thinking these thoughts instead…”I have plenty of time”, “There is no rush”, “I can do this”, “I can figure this out”? These are better thoughts to be thinking and get you to feel calmer, more peaceful and possibly determined.  All better feelings than overwhelm.  From this space you will be able to take better action and get the results you are hoping for.

Just remember, overwhelm is just a feeling.  That is great news, because it means you can change it just by thinking some different thoughts.  It is as easy as that.
