Do you have grit?
In order to be a successful businesswoman you need many things. You need to wear many hats until you are successful enough to hire others to help you with what needs to be done. Just some of the roles you need to embody is being the boss, being the employee, the creative director, the social media expert, the advertiser, the salesperson, the executive assistant. In order to fulfill these effectively you need to have grit.
What is grit? There are several characteristics that make up grit:
- Most of us would probably think of courage in terms of being physically brave, but in this case to be brave in business means the courage to put yourself out there. It is really scary, especially if you are just starting out. You don’t think you have the confidence or know enough or think people won’t want what you are selling. You are scared of failing, of humiliating yourself. Bur remember all these things are just feelings. You don’t need to be scared of feelings. You can do hard things and the more you do them, the more evidence you get of yourself being courageous.
- If you want to build a solid business you need to take care of the details. I had a boss who always used to instill in us…”attention to fine detail”. It is the simple things like the correct spelling, that the correct document goes to the correct people, checking that you have all the information you need, do what you say you are going to do. This creates trust in your product or service, you have to consistently deliver. Just a word of caution here – don’t overdo the double-checking thing to such an extent that you delay or procrastinate or wait until it’s perfect. Do your usual checks and send or do.

Hi, I’m Antoinette Porter, your hostess at Live Life Inspired where we will explore what is possible in your life. A life you can look back on and say, “Wow!! I did that!”
Do you have grit?
- You need to keep going no matter what. I would say this is the cornerstone of grit. Keeping your reason for doing this business front and centre so that you don’t get side-tracked or discouraged. Being in business means you are going to fail, over and over again. This is a given. In order to be a successful businesswoman you need to get back up and try again. Don’t create drama around failing. See it as a math problem. Ok so this didn’t work, let’s try that. If that thing doesn’t work let’s try C and so on until something clicks. There is no wrong way of doing something, there is only testing things until they work.
- As I mentioned above, leave the drama out of it. You are going to fail. What will set you apart from someone who bails, is that you try and try again. Reframe failing for yourself. You are just learning what works and what doesn’t. It’s a learning process till you get to success. This is where coaching comes in really handy, and actually right through this process. When you constantly failing, you want to make it about you. You are not good enough, you don’t have what it takes, you can’t do this…. A coach views the process objectively and can help you through the blocks and negative narrative.
- Lastly, passion. You need to eat, sleep, breath your business. By this I mean you need to be laser focused on where you are headed. The path to there will not be a straight line or necessarily where you think it will be, so you need to be flexible in how you get there. But you need “the what” to be super clear. Our minds love to be given something to focus on or it will be very scattered. So focus on your business and keep your why strong. Love your business and treat it like you would a baby. Take care of it, pay attention to it, feed it and it will grow nice and strong. For me, I love being a life coach, it is my passion. I love helping people and seeing them succeed. Ask yourself if you would do it for free. This should give you a clue as to how passionate you are.
People with grit are more likely to succeed in business and it is not something you are born with, it is something you cultivate. Everyone can have grit.
Till next week.
