Do you create or consume?
If you are not aware of what you are doing, you are most likely consuming way more than you are creating. I, for one, am so guilty of this. I love reading, fiction, non-fiction, self-help books, all of it. This is called consuming.
DO YOU CREATE OR CONSUME?
If you are not aware of what you are doing, you are most likely consuming way more than you are creating. I, for one, am so guilty of this. I love reading, fiction, non-fiction, self-help books, all of it. This is called consuming. Now you all know if you are reading self-help, for example, there are often calls to action, things that you need to do, think about, and investigate. How often do you actually stop reading and do the exercises? I am betting not often.
How often do we not read about something we want to do or try and then just leave it at that? There may be a lovely recipe you want to try or there is this beautiful spot you want to visit. It is true, it is much easier just to google something or read up about something, it is quite another to put it into practice.
Doing the work
We often think that reading up about something is doing the work. It isn’t. This is called passive action. It looks like a lot of action, but really all it is is taking in info related to the topic matter you are interested in. For example, say you want to learn to sell. You read up about it, you google, you speak to salespeople, you gather information. But you are not actually selling anything yet. Until you actually try and sell something, you are not taking proper action.
Actually, doing the thing is called massive action. You go out, you speak to people, you sell something, sometimes you don’t and then you try someone else until you do sell something. All the theory in the world is not going to make you good at selling. You may be a whiz at knowing all the steps, but unless you are putting your knowledge into action, all it is, is knowledge in your head.
Creating looks like doing something with the information you got.
Does the info tell you to get on the treadmill for 20 min a day in order to get your cardiovascular fitness up? The only way you get to do this is if you actually get on the treadmill and walk or run for 20 min a day. Creating is putting something out into the world that was not there before. I am creating this blog. It was not there this morning. This morning it was an entry in my diary to do, it was an idea of a topic I wanted to write about.
How often do you create?
For some people it is easier, it could be part of their job description, like a chef or baker creating dishes or cakes. But what If a shop assistant? They could perhaps create displays of the wares they sell, or create friendly and helpful conversations with customers. What could you create within your job description? Instead of just thinking of things that you do, ask what you can create?
Information overload
We have so much information thrown at us from all sides, tv, the internet, and our phones. Some we like, but most of it is not necessary, yet we still listen or absorb the information because of our fear of missing out. We have to be a lot more intentional in what we listen to or we will get completely overwhelmed and even take on other people’s opinions. We have to decide for ourselves what sort of information we let into our lives and from there decide if it serves us, can we use it to better our lives, or decide that it has no place in our well-curated lives.
Be mindful of the things you listen to and read and decide if you can create something from that. It could be forming your own ideas on a subject and teaching that, it could be deciding that you want to live a simpler life or how to tend to your roses. Don’t be too quick to jump to the next book. There is always more out there, a ton of information and there is no way you can take it all in. Decide what works for you and savor your choices, consume with a purpose.
