DECLUTTER YOUR LIFE

Do you feel as though you have so much stuff?  Are your closets overflowing with clothes you never wear?  Does your mind feel like its racing with all the thoughts and things you have to do and remember? 

Right now I am in a middle of a move and have all the things going on.  It is also spring here in the Southern Hemisphere and a great time to get stuck into creating more space, freedom and peace in your life and surroundings.

Let’s start with those closets! 

Pick one closet and remove everything from it, everything.  Get some cleaning cloths and wipe down the shelves, drawers, doors.  You will be surprised how dusty it gets in there even when the doors are closed.  Now that you have a clean cupboard, be very intentional of what you add back in. 

For us coming from winter into spring, you may want to put all your winter clothes in a pile, so that you can either put them in another closet or put them in storage bags.  If you are adding your summer clothes, make sure they are clean, ironed, do not need repairing and most importantly, fit you correctly.  If not, do NOT put them back in your closet.

What Irritates you?

I also enjoy having similar hangers, it speaks to the symmetry and neatness in me.  If you don’t mind one way or another, pick hangers that don’t drop your clothes.  Sometimes if you are using a wooden hanger for example, a silk blouse may slip off if you don’t have those special grips on the hanger.  There is nothing so irritating when you find your special blouse lying on the floor and needing ironing again. 

You may also want to invest in lingerie dividers.  They have these need little spaces for your bra’s, panties and socks.  It is such a pleasure to open your closet and seeing everything in order and you can pick what you want at a glance.  Also take care how many t-shirts you stack on top of each other, if you put too many in a pile you end up with lots of wrinkles and end up not wearing the bottom ones.

Check all your summer shoes.  Get rid of the ones that don’t look so good anymore or have them repaired and cleaned if you can.  Once you have replaced or packed your closet back you can see what you may need to buy.  This will also help with preventing those impulse buys.  Do this process with all your closets and see how much lighter you feel, you should feel a difference immediately.

This leads me to my next point of mind clutter.  If your surroundings and closets are full of clutter, you will find that your mind is full of clutter as well.  And as it relates to your surroundings, your mind will be full of thoughts like….I need to give that away….I need to have this thing repaired…I will clean it out later and then just close the door on it.  This does not lead to a spacious, open mind or a tidy room or closet.

If you are feeling as though your mind is constantly on the go, as is mine at the moment.  I am thinking of 101 things I need to do that relates to my move.  What I find helps is, first thing in the morning, good cup of coffee in hand (of course), I write down everything that is going on in my mind.  What I am fearful of, what I need to do, who I need to call, what I need to remember.

Immediately I feel my mind lighten because I have it all down on paper now.  I am not clogging up my mind with trying to remember everything.  I make a to-do/ to remember list and work from there.  The “what I am fearful of” thoughts, I also write down and figure out what am I thinking, are these valid fears or just my brain doing its usual thing of keeping me in place where it is safe.

Give yourself the time to do this simple exercise, you will immediately feel more in control and able to handle the 101 things without any stress.
