Curator of your life
Last week my blog was about your life business plan where I encouraged you to have a plan for your life and not allow everyone else to run your life.
Today I want to talk about being the curator of your life. Now the term curator is generally reserved for the person who is in charge of a museum, however I really love the definition of a curator. To be the custodian of the museum, but in this case, being the custodian of your own life.
A curator acquires, cares for and develops their own life. I think this is a beautiful analogy of what we should be doing with our own lives. I was listening to a podcast this morning about this very idea. As kids we are at the mercy of our parents, we have to do what they say, we often take on their beliefs, whether they are accurate or not. Yet when we become adults we still defer to people in authority, our parents, people who we think know better than us and take on their beliefs.
Stand on your own
We often do not stand on our own, perhaps because we are not sure of ourselves. We don’t want to make mistakes and feel stupid, so we often blindly follow along with what other people want or go along with popular opinion. Now back in the day, doing this was good for our survival. We needed to be part of a tribe or we would surely die, but this is not the case anymore.
While it is important to learn from other people and we are even encouraged to emulate others who are where we want to be, this is only meant to be part of the acquiring stage. Of course, when we leave our parents’ house we are young and naĂŻve and we don’t know much about the world and the going on’s yet.Â
However, many of us are afraid of trying new things, doing new things because we don’t want to fail, we don’t want our parents and peers to be disappointed in us.
Curator of your life
Acquiring is an important part of setting up our lives for success. We learn from others, we learn from our mistakes, we take what we need and apply it to our own lives. What you learn and apply will be very different to what I learn and apply.Â
This does not mean following others blindly, but rather taking our what looks interesting and may apply to your life and using that while discarding the rest. I also want to encourage you to not be afraid of failure and getting it wrong. You learn a lot this way.

Take care of ourselves
Being a curator of our lives also means we have to take care of ourselves in every sense of the word. We need to make sure we take care of our bodies, minds and our lives. In order to live a well ordered and happy life, we need to be healthy and have energy to do all the things we want to do. We need to take care of our mental health, which seems to have a stigma attached to it. When most people talk about mental health, they think about people being mentally ill and having personality disorders and while this is part of it, all of us have brains and minds and like our bodies, we need to make sure we take care of ourselves even if we don’t have mental issues.
Modern society requires a lot from us and we can easily be overwhelmed by it all, if we don’t take steps to protect ourselves. Some of us can handle a huge amount of stress and even thrive on the fast pace, others, myself included, are introverted, we need a lot of space, quiet and a more gentle pace. We can get overwhelmed very quickly and need to take the time and do what is necessary for our mental wellbeing.
We also need to grow and evolve
I happen to think this part of being a curator is the most fun. Whether you believe it or not, every person has a purpose here on earth and most of us take a while before we realise what that is for us. Most of us never truly find it, and could do well to really enjoy the whole experience of being a human on earth. All the good experiences and also the very challenging ones. These are all part of our growth and sometimes it is not fun, but if you can see the benefit of all your experiences, you are well on your way to “winning” at life.
How can you be the curator of your life? What changes would you make? And what would you let go of?
Till next week.
