Crazy Brain
CRAZY BRAIN
I don’t know about you ladies, but I get what I call crazy brain and even more so now that I am hot on the trail of my goals. The brain is a wonderful part of your body and is capable of so much, but for the purposes of what we are talking about here, there are 2 important parts of the brain. The primitive brain and the pre-frontal cortex.
Primitive brain
The primitive is the part of your brain tasked to keep you alive no matter what. It did very well for us when we were living in caves and had to hunt for food and dodge predators, but in our modern age it does not have to go to such extremes to keep us alive. Most of us live in warm houses, with plenty of food to eat and are relatively safe. Yet our primitive brain still wants to keep us safe, lying on the couch is safe, watching TV is safe, keeping us coddled at home is safe.
Unfortunately the problem with this is we don’t live the lives we want, we don’t venture out into the world and experience things. Some of us do, but then we get scared or things get uncomfortable and we think we are just not meant to explore what life is all about. This is just our primitive brains trying to keep us safe.
Pre-frontal cortex
The pre-frontal cortex is the part of the brain that plans, that comes up with ideas and wants to implement them. This is the part that wants to move you forward, that wants you to explore life and see what is possible.
So how these 2 parts of the brain works is, say we have a goal we would really like to achieve eg weight loss. Our pre-frontal cortex thinks things through, what is needed to lose the weight, perhaps a weight loss plan, some exercise, working on the mind with regards to losing weight. You plan all of this and put it into your calendar, what you are going to eat when, when you are going to exercise, etc.
This is the easy part, the planning of this great goal you are after.
The Hard Part
The hard part is when 6am rolls around and you have to actually get out of bed and do the exercise class or go for that run that you have planned and put in your calendar.
This is where your primitive brain kicks in and says…push snooze on your alarm clock….it’s too cold to get up….I am too tired…let’s start tomorrow…you all know what I am talking about here!!
Just your brain trying to keep you safe, a warped idea in this day and age, but that is it’s job. This does not mean that something has gone wrong. You have not chosen the wrong goal. The first step is to recognize what is going on, it’s just your primitive brain being all cute and trying to keep you safe.
Push Through Your Goal
Once you know that this is what is going on, it is easier to push through with your goal. If you look at your brain almost as an outside observer, you get what’s going on and show up for what you have planned anyway.
People think that when they encounter resistance of any sort, it is a sign to give up or that it is not the right thing to do. Wrong!!!
If you are aware that this part of your brain is going tilt on you, you can plan for it. You decide what you will think instead. “Yes brain, I see what you are doing here, but I am going to get up anyway and follow my dreams.” There is no one in this world who has it easy, who has success without brain challenges, but they anticipate the challenges and show up for themselves anyway.
If your goal is big enough you may experience quite a bit of anxiety around it, but the trick is not to try and get away from the anxiety or niggly, uncomfortable feeling, see it for what it is and pack it in your handbag and go for your goal anyway. More often that feeling goes away and even if it does not, it is only a feeling. What is the worst that can happen?
So ladies think about your extraordinary goals and go for them please. You have this one life and don’t let a little resistance put you off. You are strong, you can do this!!
I would love to hear what your cute primitive brain is coming up with and how you decided to be a badass woman anyway….
Till next week.
