Celebrate yourself
We as women very rarely take the time to celebrate ourselves. We often do more than our fair share with working, household chores and raising kids and we beat ourselves up for not doing it properly. Whatever properly is, according to our definition. Yet we don’t celebrate the fact that we are handling multiple roles that are mostly challenging and are actually doing pretty well at them.
There is also the media to contend with. We get thousands of messages every day that we should do more, be more and that is exactly what those messages want us to believe. They are trying to sell something by praying on our insecurities and if we buy this one thing, our lives will be magically better. We even do this ourselves. We often post beautiful pictures on Instagram or Facebook, etc about what we are doing. We document our travels, our food, our get togethers and it all looks amazing.
Amazing experiences
And while we do have amazing experiences, there are also a host of very real life drama’s that are taking place behind the scenes. To give you an example. We just spent 2 days in New York. My son really wanted to see the Museum of Natural History as they have an enormous collection of dinosaurs. He is a fundi. He has a toy triceratops which he carries around with him wherever we go. So we go to New York, visit Times Square, go to Central Park and dash through the zoo and then of course the Museum.
All of it amazing and not! As you know he is autistic and the sounds and people were just too overwhelming for him. And while he loved it, physically he really battled with sensory overload and trying to keep him regulated was another story all together. Some might say it was not worth it, others say take the good with the bad and that is what we decided to do. It was rough, yet we made his little heart so happy and that was worth it.
Celebrate yourself
It is great to post all the wonderful pictures of peoples amazing lives, but would it not be more fascinating to experience the full picture? I am not suggesting airing all the dirty laundry, but let’s be real about our experiences and celebrate that while we have challenges, we do handle them, sometimes well other times not so much. I can guarantee you that the memories my family has of New York and the Museum will be all good in a few weeks and we will have forgotten the challenges we experienced.
When you look at all these pics and read the stories that just sound wonderful, use them as an inspiration rather than putting yourself down or comparing your very real life to this ideal. I can promise you that their lives are just as real, but they choose to leave out the unsavoury bits.

Hi, I’m Antoinette Porter, your hostess at Live Life Inspired where we will explore what is possible in your life. A life you can look back on and say, “Wow!! I did that!”
A practice I have started doing every evening is mentally going through my day and just giving myself a pat on the back for jobs well done or just the fact that everyone is still alive and well. The great thing about a new day is that you can start over, you get a reset and you can choose to do things differently if needed. It is so important to give yourself credit for the things you did well and give yourself compassion when you didn’t. It is all good.
Gratitude is also a lovely practice to include in your daily life
We think we have problems and challenges, but there are so many people who have more than us. And I don’t want to use that as a comparison, but sometimes we catastrophize and once in a while it is nice to get a bit of perspective.
It is good to remember that life is 50/50 and no matter how hard things are right now, they can never stay there forever, it is a Universal Law. So when you are forgetting to celebrate yourself, take out that list of things you made to celebrate yourself and pick one off and do that.
You are amazing and worthy and worth it. Let’s celebrate that.
Till next week.
