Are you Underearning?

Are you earning what you think you should be earning?  I am guessing most of us will say no.  We want to earn more.  We compare ourselves and our earning power to another person and think we should be earning the same as them or more.  It does not look like they are working a lot or harder so it stands to reason that we should be on the same level.

Most of us believe that we have to put the time and effort into creating more money.  We tend to limit ourselves in terms of earning money.  Our ability to earn is not about the amount of time we put in or the effort we make.  It is true that some people earn per hour or per day, so that means you can only earn X amount in an hour or a day.  On the other hand, we also know of a lot of people who work long, hard hours and get very little compensation in return.

We do see quite a few people who seem to do very little but they earn enormous amounts of money

Are you ready for the secret to doing this?  The secret is that earning is about the value you provide and how you receive.  Let’s chat about providing value.  If you provide a lot of value to a person who thinks it is valuable, they will pay you for that value.  Most of us think that when we have a job, just turning up and possibly doing the bare minimum means we have to get paid.  And while this is technically true, we limit ourselves so much by this kind of thinking.

Are you underearning?

What if you showed up to your job with a can-do attitude, nothing is too much trouble, you are willing to do what needs to be done and more?  Do you think that the money you earn would stay the same?  Your boss would notice because you stand out and you are adding value to his business.  The same goes for your own business.  Do you go out of your way to keep your clients happy and being of service to them?  Or do you do the bare minimum?  If you are willing to provide the value they need, you will always be in demand.

Now some of you may say that you do provide a ton of value and still don’t get paid for it.  I would offer that you are not providing the kind of value they want or you are providing value to the wrong person.  I always use the example of a top chef.  A top chef in a 5 star restaurant would be able to earn very well, the same chef working in a school cafeteria would not.  This is not because the chef is no good, but because he is offering his value to the wrong people.

“Your boss is also your client”

If you can figure out what your client needs (your boss is also your client) and provide them with that, your value automatically goes up.  If you show up from a place of abundance and giving, your earning power goes up.  Always overdeliver.  The value will always come back to you.

Our next point is to be open to receiving.  Most cases you will receive actual money for the value you provide, the more value, the more money.  However, there will also be times when you will receive other forms of payment.  It may be in the way of bartering, or services provided for you, time or things that are valuable to you.  Do not think that the only way to earn is via money.

You discount and are in scarcity if you only take money into account.  When I started coaching, I had a couple of clients I used to coach for “free” and in turn they provided services I needed in my business.  This was a trade in value and absolutely priceless to both parties.

Be 100% responsible for your earning power

Do not make it your boss or clients’ responsibility.  It is your responsibility to figure out the value you can give and overdeliver it.  Do it from a place of abundance and keep in mind how you are thinking about the value you are creating, what you are creating and what you are receiving.

I will leave you with these 3 questions?

  • How much do you want to earn?
  • What value will you give?
  • How can you be more open to receiving?
