Are you neglecting your body?

I have just done a week long workshop with my coach about how to treat yourself like a queen.  It was sooo good.  While I think I am doing quite well, I realized I could uplevel my game.  We get so busy and have so much on our to do list that we often neglect ourselves and our self-care.

Which resonates with you?

Perhaps you are not getting enough movement or exercise, perhaps you are not paying attention to what you are putting into your body or drinking enough water, perhaps you have been thinking crappy thoughts, thoughts that do not serve you.  Perhaps you are not having enough fun or downtime.  Perhaps your self-talk is not helpful or inspiring.  Or you are not paying attention to any of these areas.

Let’s have a look at these areas and see if you can perhaps elevate your mood and energy.  We often think that we need to have energy to move our bodies or we don’t exercise because we do not have the energy.  Actually it works the other way round.  We have to move first and then we get the energy.  Easy?  Hell no!

But once you start exercising, even if it is just walking around the block to start and you keep doing that, you will start to get some energy or feel the need to move more.  I actually find that the more I move, the more my life moves forward too.  An added bonus.

What does your diet/eating habits look like? 

Are you eating mindlessly or feeding your body nutritious healthy food?  We all know that a car cannot go if you don’t put the necessary fuel into it, the same happens with our bodies.  We need good fuel in order to function at our optimum level.  Pay attention to how your body feels and if you aren’t feeling to good, perhaps you should be looking at your eating habits.  The same goes for drinking water.  We all need water to survive and it is a vital part of keeping our bodies functioning and hydrated.

Thinking bad thoughts

Now, how about the thoughts you are thinking?  A good way to detect if you are having good thoughts are by paying attention to how you are feeling.  If you aren’t feeling good, the chances are you are not thinking good thoughts.  We all know what it’s like waking up in the middle of the night and your mind goes to worse case scenario, or you go dig up thoughts from way back and before you know it, you think your life is terrible, nothing is going right and you are never going to amount to anything.  You just go into a negative spiral.

The good news is you can think better thoughts, you can make the decision to think better thoughts.  It is also helpful to ask yourself good questions eg how can I make my life better or what do I need to do in order to reach my goal.  Try to stay away from “why” questions, unless you are trying to figure out why something did not work and that encourages you to think what your next step is.  It takes training.  There is not one person who is just positive, they decide every day that they are going to be positive or look for the positive in something.

Enjoy the things you really love

It is also important to take the time to enjoy the things you really love and I am not talking about false pleasures.  Think about things that you really enjoy doing, make a list.  For me the list looks something like this:  reading, enjoying hot baths, eating a good meal, the view from my patio, sunshine, going for walks in nature, journaling, meditation.  These are all things that I love doing and try to make time in my day to incorporate any of these.

Lastly, what does your self-talk sound like.  What do you think when you walk past a mirror?  Is it…my thighs are too big, my hair is a mess…or…do you wink and say hi gorgeous, looking good today, I am so proud of you.  Notice how you feel when you criticize yourself and notice how you feel when you compliment yourself.  I am betting the latter feels way better.  Just a small compliment is all that is needed to put you in a better space.  Try it now!
