Resources & Support
When a child is diagnosed with autism, that journey can feel like a winding road with unexpected turns. You may find yourself navigating a new world of therapies, school systems and social expectations. But here is the good news: you don’t have to do it alone. There are a wealth of resources and support systems available to help you and your child thrive. Let’s have a look at some of these and discover why coaching can be an invaluable tool on this journey.
The first step to feeling empowered as a parent is understanding autism. ASD is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others and experiences the world. It is called a spectrum because each person with autism is unique with different strengths and challenges.
Knowledge is power
When you take the time to understand your child’s specific needs and how autism affects them, you are better equipped to advocate for them then and find the right support. Books, podcasts and websites dedicated to autism can be great starting points. For instance, each country or state has an Autism Society or various organizations who offer comprehensive resources that cover everything from early signs of autism to adulthood.
One of the most uplifting aspects of this journey is discovering that you are not alone. Connecting with other parents who understand what you are going through can be a tremendous source of strength. These connections can happen online or in person, through support groups, coaching, forums or social media communities.
Online communities offer platforms where parents can share their experiences, ask questions and offer support. These communities can be a lifesaver on those days when you just need to vent or hear from someone who gets it. Pay attention to how you feel when you are in these communities. If it at all feels negative or a drag, find another community. Your energy is too precious to waste on communities that are just down on autism.

My goal is to help families foster a deeper understanding of autism and find balance and joy in their lives.
Resources & Support
Many communities have local support groups for parents and for autistic children. These groups often meet regularly and provide a safe space to share your experiences, gain insights and build friendships. Your local Autism Society or special education department can help you find these groups.
The journey with autism often involves working with a variety of specialists. Speech therapists, occupational therapists and behavioural therapists can play crucial roles in your child’s development. These professionals can help your child improve their communication skills, fine motor abilities and social interactions.
Finding the right therapist is like finding a trusted ally. They become part of your child’s support system and can offer you guidance and strategies to use at home. When looking for a therapist consider their experience with autism, their approach and how well they connect with your child.
If your child is diagnosed at a young age, early intervention programs can be especially beneficial. These programs are designed to provide support as early as possible, which can significantly impact your child’s development. However, don’t be discouraged if your child was not diagnosed at an early age, you can still get help for him or her and it will still have a huge impact.
Resources & Support
Your child’s education is a key part of their development and schools can be an essential resource. It’s important to build a strong partnership with your child’s educators to ensure they receive the support they need.
If your child is in school, they may be eligible for an Individualized Education Plan. An IEP is a customized plan designed to meet your child’s unique educational needs. Working closely with your child’s teachers and special education team to develop and review this plan can make a big difference in their academic and social progress.
Don’t be afraid to advocate for your child. You know them best and your insights are valuable in creating a supportive educational environment. There are also educational advocates who can help you navigate the school system and ensure your child’s needs are met.
Now, let’s talk about coaching – a resource that’s often overlooked but can be a game-changer. Parenting a child with autism comes with unique challenges and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or uncertain about the best way to support your child. This is where coaching comes in.
Resources & Support
Coaching provides you with a dedicated space to explore your concerns, set goals and develop strategies tailored to your family’s needs. A coach can help you navigate the complexities of autism, from managing daily routines to getting you to a place where you feel empowered as a person and as a parent of autism. We offer an outside perspective, which can be incredibly valuable when you’re in the thick of things.
Coaching isn’t just about your child – it’s about you too. It’s about helping you grow as a parent, find balance and take care of your well-being. A coach can support you in building resilience, managing stress and staying connected to your own goals and passions. One of the most comforting aspects of coaching is knowing you have a partner in your journey. Someone who is there to listen, encourage and guide you as you navigate the ups and downs of parenting an autistic child.
For your child to be successful, you need to set yourself up with all the resources and support you can get, in order for you to help your child to be the best possible version of themselves.
