3 Ways to stop negative spirals
I am sure you have all had these. Negative spirals. They always seem to come in the middle of the night, or when you are trying to get to sleep. Your brain comes up with things that happened 20 years ago. Things you have not thought of in 20 years, yet all of a sudden your brain thinks they are so important and related to what you are thinking about right now. What do these thoughts have in common? They are negative.
You have all heard of the Law of Attraction.
If you think negative thoughts, you will keep thinking them, adding to them and then start attracting the very things you don’t want. Negative thoughts don’t just happen to you. You think them into being. You have power over your thoughts. When you start thinking negative thoughts, you brain goes, OK I can help you with that and start feeding you more thoughts that are negative.
This is very good news. If you have power over your thoughts, you can actually choose different thoughts, positive thoughts, thoughts that serve you. We all make out that we don’t have a choice with our thoughts and it is a lie. We do have choices, a lot of choices and one of those is we can choose our thoughts. What happens is that when we are in a cycle of negative thinking and we do this often, it gets easier to do. For example, if you go down a dirt road and it is very muddy and produces deep furrows, you could let go of your car steering wheel and the car will just keep going down those ruts.

Hi, I’m Antoinette Porter, your hostess at Live Life Inspired where we will explore what is possible in your life. A life you can look back on and say, “Wow!! I did that!”
Ruts
In order to get out of the ruts, however, you are going to have to put some muscle behind your steering in order to move out of them. The same thing happens with your thoughts. It is easy to think negative thoughts, but in order to change it you have to practice thinking positive thoughts. And just as you can go down a negative spiral you can go up a positive spiral as well. It may not be so easy to start, but once you ask your brain to bring you some positive thoughts, guess what it will do?
Another tip you can implement is when you are lying in bed and all these negative thoughts come up, is to interrupt your thought pattern. For example, if you are thinking about what happened at work today, that was not a good experience, turn it around. Ask yourself, what was good about today, what was good about that bad experience. It is not going to work on the first try, but keep going. The thing about bad or negative experiences are that there is always something positive about it. It may not seem so in the moment. Life is always a balance of good and bad. Where there is something good, there is something negative and visa versa.
I have good backup thoughts
Since I have learnt to expect these negative spirals, they don’t come all that often for me anymore, I have good backup thoughts. For me they are of my son. I think about how much I love him, how well he is doing, what funny thing he did that day. And before I know it, I have created a positive spiral and I am smiling and getting drowsy enough to fall asleep. So what are your happy thoughts? What makes you smile? Your brain may want to intervene with a negative thought and you just have to say, thank you, but no thank you, I am choosing to think a better thought.
Your brain may even tell you all those negative thoughts are very important and you have to think about that thing that happened 20 years ago. Just remind your brain that is in the past, you are a different person now and you are moving towards your future self. You’ve got this.

It may also be one specific thing that is bothering you, which then leads you down the path of negativity. If this is the case, it will also help to journal out the problem, get it onto paper and out of your head. Think it through and ask some good questions about the situation. Sometimes it helps me to go to worse case scenario and making peace with that, then nothing else seems as frightening, as worse case scenario’s very seldom happen.
Create some positive spirals for yourself and keep them in your pocket for when your mind wants to drag you down.
Till next week.
