3 Ways to start the new year with a bang
Most people start the New Year with a bunch of resolutions and mostly they only last a few days or a month at most. Why is that? People don’t make the right kind of preparation for these resolutions. They make a statement like, “I am going to get fit” and then start going to the gym on the 3rd of the month…and then it petters out. There is no plan, there is no preparation, there is no visualization and people wonder why they don’t stick to their resolutions.
Firstly
Decide exactly what it is that you want to do, not a whole list, just one thing. Of course you normally have other things on your list, but you have to choose one thing to concentrate on, at least for the first month until you get the hang of it. Let’s take our example of getting fit. Great idea, but what does that actually look like. How do you know when you are fit? Does it mean being able to run 10km? Does it mean losing 10% body fat? Does it mean fitting into a size 8 jeans? What does it look like for you? Be very clear and specific.
Goal or resolution
When you are clear and specific with your goal or resolution, you brain now knows what you are working towards. You have given it a clear instruction and it will work with you in achieving your goal. If you are vague, you will be all over the place, you will be distracted and stuck on the runway without a destination.
Secondly, you have to plan.
Brainstorm all the things you will need like equipment, shopping lists of clothing, etc, and what you will do in order to get to your end result. Would you need to do some research, factor that in, will you need to speak to a specialist, put it on your list. If you take into account all the things you would need in order to get to your goal, you will not be thrown off guard halfway through and have to stop.
What are all the steps you need to take in order to be able to run 10km? You are going to have to break it down into manageable steps over the time period you have given yourself. Create a calendar for yourself and add all of these steps into your calendar, all the equipment you are going to need, all the research and talking to specialists.
Put every little thing you have written down into your calendar. Put it in order and then stick to your calendar. For example, on Monday at 10am I am going to buy a pair of running shoes. On Tuesday at 12pm I have an appointment with a fitness instructor to help me work out a running schedule that suits my level of fitness.
Calendar
Once you have everything plugged into your calendar, you know exactly when you have to do what. You don’t have to worry about if you will reach your goal, you know for a fact that if you follow your schedule exactly you will reach it. It takes away all the decision fatigue and you will build a relationship with yourself, that if you say you are going to do it, you do it.
Getting your mindset right
Thirdly, probably the most important of the points is getting your mindset right. If you have managed to go through the first 2 points you pretty much made up your mind that you really want this for yourself. Now you just have to overcome the obstacles you come up against and your own brain. There are times you are going to want to give up or not do what is on your calendar and you are going to do it anyway.
Because you made a commitment to yourself, you always show up for yourself.
Decide ahead of time why this goal or resolution is so important to you. It’s got to be good! Good enough to get you up off the couch when you are not in the mood to do what is on your calendar. Now there are also going to be times when you can’t go running because it is hailing outside and you have to make provision for that. Perhaps you could go later, or run on the treadmill or go to the gym. Decide what your solutions will be. Don’t make excuses or change your schedule for just anything.
Be specific when you will implement changes.
You now have the 3 most important tools you need to start your goals and most importantly reach them.
